CASE STUDY

Bluebird

Nicholas is the main carer for his wife Sofia who has quite advanced Alzheimer’s – they are both in their 70s.  Nicholas was spending all his time looking after his wife and didn’t feel able to leave her alone.  Nicholas needed to have some time to get out of the house and do things for himself, like go for a swim or see his GP. Nicholas’ caring role was impacting on his emotional health and he was feeling extremely low.  His daughter said “we were desperate for Dad, my Mum needs a lot of care and attention and Dad was feeling depressed and inadequate”.

Wandsworth Carers’ Centre had arranged with Bluebird Care for a Care work to come to be with Sofia for two hours every day to give Nicholas time to get out and to have some time for himself.  Bluebird Care arranged for the same person to come Monday to Friday which gave Nicholas and the rest of the family piece of mind.

Having a reliable support worker for Sofia every day has made a huge difference to Nicholas.  He is now able to get out of the house to do whatever he wants or needs to do, secure in the knowledge that Sofia is safe and happy with the respite Carer while he is out.  He can keep appointments with his GP, and now and then he even gets to have a swim.
